DHAKA: The main opposition BNP forewarned that the government might face a mass upsurge anytime for its “repressive” policy.

Party spokesman Nazrul Islam Khan aired the apprehension on Friday morning after paying homage to the late president Ziaur Rahman at his grave marking the 21st founding anniversary of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), an associate organisation of BNP.

The BNP standing committee member told journalists that the government kept on steam “repression” on the opposition leaders and was implementing the policy of coercion by setting their people in every sector.

“Mass upsurge is a must if the things go on,” he said, citing some of the setbacks they noticed.

“The medical system has collapsed due to partisanship of the government. Within one and a half years of their rule, they have sacked 32 specialist physicians and hundreds of others were suspended or transferred," Khan alleged.

He offered his party help to the government “if it practiced democracy”.

Former state minister for health Mizanur Rahman Sinha, DAB chief AKM Azizul Haque, its secretary general AZM Zahid Hossain and other top leaders of the organisation attended the programme.
