A Sylhet court has sentenced three people including a woman to death for the murder of her husband in Jaflong.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday (November 28) by Judge Shayla Sharmin of the Sylhet Additional District and Sessions Judge's Fourth Court.
The convicts are Khushnahar, 22 from Kishoreganj’s Nikli Upazila, her lover Mahmudul Hasan, 22 from Gaibandha’s Sadullapur Upazila, and their accomplice Nadim Ahmed alias Naim, 19, from Rupganj, Narayanganj.
The court also sentenced Khushnahar and Mahmudul Hasan to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 10,000 each under a separate charge. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment. Nadim was acquitted of this charge.
According to court sources, the victim, Ale Imran, 32, who worked at a shoe factory in Dhaka, went to Jaflong with his wife Khushnahar on April 11, 2023. On April 17, police found his body buried under stones behind the River View Resort in Jaflong’s Ballaghat area. The next day, Imran’s father, Abdul Jabbar, filed a murder case at the Gowainghat Police Station against unknown suspects.
On the night of April 19, Gowainghat police and district detectives arrested Khushnahar and Nadim. During interrogation, they confessed to drugging Imran with sleeping pills, suffocating him to death, and hiding his body under stones. Later, police also arrested Khushnahar’s lover, Mahmudul Hasan.
After an investigation, Gowainghat Police Inspector Enamul Hasan submitted the charge sheet to the court on August 31, 2023. The case was recorded under sessions case number 1033/23, and the trial began on November 23, 2023. Following testimonies from 19 out of 28 witnesses, the court delivered its verdict.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Jalal Uddin expressed satisfaction with the judgment.
He said that the accused were present in court when the verdict was announced. Another accused in the case, Abdur Raqib, is being tried separately in a juvenile court as he is underage.
