DHAKA: BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia feared no one, including the Prime Minister, would remain safe if the religion-based political parties are banned “in the name of constitutional amendment”.

The BNP leader came up with the foreboding while addressing as chief guest a roundtable meeting titled ‘Constitution, Democracy and Human Rights’ organized at the National Press Club by Forum of Engineers-Architects Bangladesh.

“If the religion-based political parties are banned in the name of constitutional amendment and activists of those certain parties go underground, then nobody, not even the Prime Minister, will remain safe,” he said.

He also alleged that the government is implementing the agreement signed with India “in the name of” war crimes trial and constitutional amendment.
 
Regarding the court’s verdict nullifying the 5th amendment of the constitution, barrister Mia said, “The verdict said nothing about the 4th amendment and Ershad’s power capture in illegal way.”

He also said that the motive of the government regarding the constitutional amendment is not clear.
