The students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have written an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, appealing for her assistance in keeping their campus free from student politics.

They read the letter aloud during a press conference held this evening in front of the Dr. M A Rashid Administrative Bhaban on the BUET campus.

Claiming in the letter that the environment of BUET without student politics was considerably safer and conducive to education, they assured the prime minister saying that they are united and committed to eliminating the emergence of militancy on the university campus.   

They also drew the prime minister’s attention to bring reform to the relevant law if necessary to keep the campus free from student politics.

They also expressed their optimism that the prime minister would remain beside them to fulfill their demand for the greater interest of a smooth education-friendly environment on the university campus.

Meanwhile, the High Court (HC) on Monday said that the BUET students can run political activities on the campus.

The bench of Justice Md Khosruzzaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar stayed the effectiveness of the university notice that banned student politics on the campus.

The order came in response to a writ petition filed by BUET student and Chhatra League leader Imtiaz Hossain Rahim Rabbi today.

Student politics was banned on the campus after a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League men murdered a second-year student named Abrar Fahad by members of Bangladesh Chhatra League at the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on 7 October 2019.
